Mehdi Hussain

Biography

Mehdi was most recently Deputy Head of FCDO’s East Africa Department. Before that he was Charge D’Affaires in Mauritania, and Deputy British High Commissioner in Tanzania. Mehdi also worked at the British Embassy Beijing, where he carried out several roles including Counsellor for Programming, Trade Counsellor and Counsellor for Climate & Environment.

Mehdi has worked for other departments across the UK Civil Service, including Department for International Development (now Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office), HM Revenue and Customs, Department for Work and Pensions, Department for Trade (now Department for Business and Trade), the Office for National Statistics, and the Competition and Markets Authority. Mehdi also worked on secondment from the UK government for the European Commission in Brussels.

Deputy High Commissioner to Sierra Leone

The Deputy Head of Mission is a senior diplomat and typically a key advisor to the Ambassador or High Commissioner. The Deputy is responsible for the daily management of an overseas Embassy or High Commission. They will represent the UK’s interests in the absence of the Ambassador as Chargé d’Affaires. In Freetown, they also act as a Team Leader for the Political and Governance Team, and oversee consular, security and corporate operations
