Mark Bacon

Biography

Mark has been Deputy Director for Strategy at the UK Space Agency since April 2026.

He was previously Deputy Director for Capabilities at the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology.

Mark has held a wide range of policy, strategy and operational space roles covering domestic, European and international issues, including development of major UK space programmes, multinational space strategies and domestic initiatives to support and grow the UK space sector.

Previous roles include:

  • Head of European Space Strategy, UK Space Agency
  • Head of EU Exit negotiations and mitigations, including development of UK Position, Navigation and Timing programmes, UK Space Agency
  • Deputy Chair, EU GNSS Supervisory Agency Administrative Board
  • Head of Galileo Programme Strategy, Department for Transport and UK Space Agency
  • Bill team for Community Infrastructure Levy provisions, Communities and Local Government
  • Secretariat to the independent Barker Review of Land-use Planning
  • Seconded National Expert, DG Environment, European Commission
  • Policy lead on housing and urban development, and Environmental Impact Assessment regime, Office of the Deputy Prime Minister
  • Policy lead on environmental rights including the UN Aarhus Convention, and sustainable development strategy, Department for the Environment
