Mark Ackrill

Biography

Mark is the Military Member of the Armed Forces Pay Review Body and assumed this position at the end of 3 decades of service in the Army.  He commissioned into the Army Air Corps and went on to fly helicopters in the UK and overseas, including on an exchange tour with the Royal Canadian Air Force.  He deployed on operations multiple times to Northern Ireland, Bosnia, Afghanistan and Iraq.  Mark commanded at all levels from Infantry Platoon to Aviation Brigade.

In staff positions, Mark worked in strategy, organisational design and operating model roles.  These have been in Army Headquarters and in the Ministry of Defence’s Main Building in Whitehall.  Having served throughout his career in a tri-Service aviation community, he was delighted to be the Deputy Commander of the Joint Helicopter Command.  He has deployed as a staff officer in a Multi-National Division Headquarters in Kandahar and a US Army Corps Headquarters in Baghdad.

Now a freelance consultant, Mark remains involved in projects that focus on the lived experience of Armed Forces personnel and their families.  Active in the voluntary sector, he supports the Church of England in Salisbury Diocese in various roles.  Mark graduated in International Politics and Strategic Studies from UCW, Aberystwyth and has a master’s degree from King’s College.  Outside of work, he enjoys hiking, sailing and scuba diving, and spending better quality time with his family in Salisbury.
