Lord Newby OBE

Biography

Lord Newby was appointed as Government Deputy Chief Whip and Captain of The Queen’s Bodyguard of the Yeomen of the Guard in May 2012. He is a Liberal Democrat member of the House of Lords.

Education

He was educated at Rothwell Grammar School and St Catherine’s College, Oxford, where he read politics, philosophy and economics.

Political career

Lord Newby was raised to the peerage in 1997 and served as Chief of Staff to Charles Kennedy, Leader of the Liberal Democrats between 1999 and 2006. He was also the Liberal Democrat Treasury Spokesperson in the Lords from 1998 until 2010. He was National Secretary of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) from 1981 to 1988.

Career outside politics

He worked for HM Customs and Excise between 1974 and 1981. After the SDP he worked corporate affairs and communications, before becoming an adviser on corporate responsibility issues.

Personal life

Lord Newby is married with 2 sons.
