Kate English

Biography

Kate English took up her position as Deputy Head of Mission at the British Embassy in Tripoli in April 2021. Prior to this, she was Deputy Head of Mission at the British Embassy in Tunis, a job she shared with her husband Tom Matlock, also an officer in the UK Diplomatic Service.

Kate joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 2006. Much of her career to date has been focused on the region, including as Head of the Egypt Team following the Arab Spring and as Second Secretary Political in the British Embassy in Khartoum. Kate also worked as Private Secretary for an FCO Minister and was posted to Seoul as Head of Press and Public Affairs.

Kate studied Geography at the University of Oxford and has an MSc in Finance and Economics from SOAS, London. She is married to Tom and they have two young children. In their spare time, they enjoy hiking, cycling and exploring the region.
