Dr Jeanelle de Gruchy

Biography

Dr Jeanelle de Gruchy has been England’s Deputy Chief Medical Officer since October 2021, supporting the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) on providing clinical public health advice on areas across health improvement. She provides professional leadership of the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID) working with national and regional teams on health improvement and health inequalities.

Dr de Gruchy supports the CMO in his role of head of the public health profession. She is the Responsible Officer for public health consultants in DHSC and local government.

Dr de Gruchy has extensive experience providing clinical public health advice at regional and local level within England, and at a national level as President of the Association of Directors of Public Health.

Dr de Gruchy did her clinical training in South Africa. She worked clinically in South Africa and in the NHS before her public health consultant training in the East Midlands.

Previous roles:

  • President of the Association of Directors of Public Health for 4 years (2018 to 2021)
  • Director of Population Health at Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council (2018 to 2021) and chair of the Greater Manchester Directors of Public Health (2020 to 2021)
  • Director of Public Health for the London Borough of Haringey (2010 to 2018) and chair of London Association of Directors of Public Health (2012 to 2014)
