Howard Orme has been Director General, Finance and Commercial, since July 2009.
Howard leads on all finance and commercial issues across the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS). He has been involved in major reforms in corporate services and large-scale savings programmes as the department has moved to a more streamlined and integrated business model.
Prior to joining BIS, Howard was Deputy Finance Director General at the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), where he led the development and implementation of several large and complex programmes. He also held several finance, commercial, marketing, international and senior leadership roles in a 24-year career in the private sector, mainly with Unilever and Allied Domecq plc.
Director General, Finance and Commercial
The Director General for Finance and Commercial sits on the Departmental and Executive Boards and chairs the Performance, Finance and Risk Committee. The Director General leads the Corporate Services Executive and is responsible for all finance and commercial issues. Further responsibilities include:
- leading work on BIS’ public bodies reform
- leading on the relationship with and governance of BIS’ partner organisations
- chairing the Corporate Services Portfolio Board, Senior Remuneration Oversight Committee and the department’s Spending Moratorium
