Biography

Sir George Young was appointed Chief Whip and Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasury in October 2012. He was elected Conservative MP for North West Hampshire on 1 May 1997.

Education

Sir George was educated at Eton before attending Christ Church, Oxford where he studied politics, philosophy and economics.

Political career

Sir George was first elected to Parliament in 1974. His early ministerial career included time at the Departments for Health, Environment and Housing. He held several positions, including Minister for Housing, Inner Cities and Construction and Secretary of State for Transport.

He was Chairman of the Select Committee on Standards and Privileges between 2001 and 2009 before joining the Shadow Cabinet as Shadow Leader of the House of Commons. He was Leader of the House of Commons and Lord Privy Seal from May 2010 to September 2012.

Career outside politics

After university, he worked in the City for merchant bank Hill Samuel, and then for the National Economic Development Office from 1966 to 1967. He then spent 2 years at the University of Surrey, where he was awarded an MPhil. From 1969 to 1974 he was Economic Adviser to the Post Office Corporation.
