Fiona Ryland

Biography
Fiona Ryland was appointed Government Chief People Officer for the Civil Service in September 2022.
Fiona has over 25 years experience in strategy and human resources (HR) roles across both the public and private sectors, joining the Civil Service from University College London (UCL) where she was Chief Operating Officer.
In her previous roles, Fiona led HR, communications, corporate responsibility and business excellence teams for Compass Group UK & Ireland. She also has extensive experience of HR management and operations at retailers including Comet, Dixons and Asda.
Fiona is a graduate in Chemical Engineering from University of Bath and also has a BSc in Psychology from the Open University. Outside of work, Fiona is married and lives in the Chilterns. She is also an avid Leyton Orient FC supporter.
Government Chief People Officer
The Government Chief People Officer is the head of the Government People Function and Director General of the Government People Group.
The responsibility of the GCPO includes:
- Overseeing the delivery of cross-government HR strategy and workforce planning.
- Leading the Government People Function and HR Profession in government.
- Ensuring the right policies and structures are in place to create an efficient and effective Civil Service.
- Improving the way we attract and develop talented civil servants who can deliver the Government’s agenda.
