Derek left Cardiff to start his career in Whitehall, working at both HM Treasury and the Department of Trade and Industry.
He returned home to Wales in 1989 to join the Welsh Office as Head of Industrial Policy. He then took posts as Head of Finance Programmes, Director of the Industry and Training department and Director of Economic Affairs.
In 1999, Derek became Senior Director of the National Assembly and was central to the operation of devolved government in Wales.
In 2008, Derek became Director of Business and Strategic Partnerships and an honorary professor with Cardiff University.
Derek was appointed Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB) in the 2014 New Year’s Honours list.
Derek lives near Cardiff with his wife and 2 sons. He has a BA in Philosophy from Cardiff University.
