Charles Hay became UK Ambassador to the Republic of Korea in February 2015.
During his time in the Diplomatic Service he has worked in Embassies in the Czech Republic, Spain and at the UK Representation to the EU in Brussels. Most recently Charles was the Director of Consular Services in London, responsible for assisting British Nationals and crisis management worldwide. Before becoming Ambassador to Korea, Charles spent a year learning Korean in London and Seoul, and had an extremely enjoyable homestay with a Korean family in Busan.
Before he started working for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 1993, he was a Captain in the British Army. Charles has a degree in Philosophy and Politics from the University of Southampton and an MBA. He is married to Pascale Sutherland and they have two daughters.

The Ambassador represents Her Majesty The Queen and the UK government in the country to which they are appointed. They are responsible for the direction and work of the Embassy and its Consulates, including political work, trade and investment, press and cultural relations, and visa and consular services.
