Dr Bryn Hughes

Biography

Bryn’s early career in the Defence Research Agency (DRA) included research work in oceanography and submarine detection. After a period of time at the Ministry of Defence (MOD), where he was responsible for part of the long term research programme, he moved back to DRA, by then known as the Defence Evaluation and Research Agency (DERA).

Having been instrumental in the formation of the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) from DERA, Bryn then returned to the MOD in a science adviser role in London. After four years in this post, he became Director for Science & Technology Capability within MOD, developing the first Defence Technology Plan. Having completed this task, he returned to Dstl prior to being seconded to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

Bryn is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and the Chartered Institute for IT (BCS), and is a member of the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS).
