Professor Andy Hall

Biography

Andy has recently retired from the position of Chief Nuclear Inspector in the Office for Nuclear Regulation. His career with the regulatory body spanned technical assessment, site inspection and nuclear policy roles, and over the years he held various senior management positions including Head of the Nuclear Power Reactors Division, Head of the Nuclear Fuel Cycle and Decommissioning Division, and Head of the Health and Safety Executive’s Nuclear and Hazardous Installations Policy Division.

His expertise was recognised internationally through his appointment as Chair of the European Nuclear Safety Regulators Group, which advises the European Commission, and his election to Vice-President for the Fouth Review Meeting of the Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and on the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management.

Andy’s early career was spent in academia undertaking research in astrophysics, during which he was elected a postdoctoral Research Fellow and member of the governing body of St Edmund Hall, Oxford. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics.
