Andy’s immediately previous positions focused on security. As Head of Security for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) from 2008 to 2015 he was responsible for protecting the UK’s network of embassies and consulates overseas against terrorism and espionage. Following that, from 2015 to 2016, he was a director at FCO Services, a trading fund providing specialised security services to the UK Government and its allies.
Prior to that Andy has held a range of positions in the Diplomatic Service. He was Deputy Head of Mission at the British Embassy in Bangkok from 2003 to 2008; and Deputy Head of Mission in Bucharest from 2000 to 2003. He has also worked on arms control issues and Gibraltar; and been posted to South Africa (1996 to 2000) working on trade policy and economic reform; and to Israel (1992 to 1996) on the Peace Process and bilateral relations.
Andy grew up in rural Norfolk in eastern England. He studied Chemistry at Oxford and did a year’s research into new battery technologies before joining the Diplomatic Service. He speaks fluent Thai and loves hiking, climbing and the wild. He is married to Pornpun and they have two children, a son and a daughter (and two much loved family cats who have accompanied them round the world).

The Chargé d’Affaires represents Her Majesty The Queen and the UK government in the country to which they are appointed. They are responsible for the direction and work of the Embassy and its Consulates, including political work, trade and investment, press and cultural relations, and visa and consular services.
