The Rt Hon Alec Shelbrooke MP

Biography

Alec Shelbrooke was Minister of State for the Ministry of Defence between 6 September 2022 and 26 October 2022.

Alec attended St George’s Church of England Comprehensive School in Gravesend, before going on to study Mechanical Engineering at Brunel University.

Alec was elected the Conservative MP for Elmet & Rothwell in 2010. He served as Parliamentary Private Secretary in the Department for Transport, the Department for Work & Pensions, the Northern Ireland Office, and the Foreign & Commonwealth Office between 2010 and 2015, before joining the NATO Parliamentary Assembly.

Alec was Vice-Chairman (International) of the Conservative Party between 2017 and 2020, a role which involved building relationships with political parties internationally to enhance democratic institutions in the developing world.

In 2020, Alec was appointed Head of the UK Delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly and served as Chairman of its Defence & Security Committee until September 2022.

Alec is a Mechanical Engineer by profession and had a successful career outside of politics before he was elected to the UK Parliament in 2010. Latterly, Alec worked on international research projects with the University of Leeds.

Alec lives at the heart of his Yorkshire constituency with his wife and two dogs. He is a Formula 1 enthusiast and follows football and cricket.
