About us

The Royal Navy Museums was established in 2008 and has museums across the United Kingdom, telling the story of the Royal Navy through its unique collection, on and under the sea, on land and in the air. It is an executive non-departmental public body sponsored by the Ministry of Defence.


With effect from 2021 the National Museum of the Royal Navy’s accounts will only be published by the Charity Commission.

The Royal Naval Museum originates from the Dockyard Museum, which was founded in 1911. Its purpose is to collect, preserve and exhibit articles and records relating to the history and traditions of the Royal Navy and its people, from earliest times to the present. It provides research and information services for serving members of the Royal Navy, the general public and schools.
