About us

The Foreign Compensation Commission works out the amount of compensation British claimants are entitled to under international and British law for losses suffered abroad. It also helps in the settlement negotiations of British property losses overseas at the hands of foreign governments.

The Foreign Compensation Commission (FCC) is a tribunal established under the Foreign Compensation Act 1950 to support the consular work of the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) by helping to determine complex or numerous compensation claims through an independent and impartial judicial process.

The FCC works out the amount of compensation British claimants are entitled to under international and British law for losses suffered abroad. Where compensation is secured through diplomatic or other means, the FCC then determines the entitlement of claimants to compensation. The FCC has also been engaged prior to settlement negotiations to administer a stock-taking of British property losses overseas at the hands of foreign governments.

The FCC carries out research and gives advice to the department; it publishes its own Annual Reports.
