About us
The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) brings together the digital services people rely on, the culture they enjoy, the sport they follow, the media they trust and the communities they belong to. Increasingly, these experiences are intertwined.
DCMS exists to help people and communities connect, create and thrive across every part of modern Britain, strengthening the security, resilience and trust that underpin modern life.
1. Helping people live richer, safer, better connected lives
People’s lives are shaped by the digital services they rely on, the culture they enjoy, the sport they follow, the media they trust and the communities they belong to. DCMS brings them together to make every day richer, safer and better connected - growing the UK’s digital and creative sectors, strengthening national security and online safety, supporting culture, sport, media, heritage and civil society and making digital services simpler and easier to use.
2. Bringing together the things that define modern Britain
Digital technology is changing how people create, communicate, participate and access public services. Bringing these areas together with culture, heritage, creative industries, sport, media, tourism and civil society recognises how closely they now shape one another, creating a department that better reflects how people experience modern life. As the digital centre of government, the newly expanded DCMS brings together policy, regulation, infrastructure and delivery to drive innovation and growth, transform public services, strengthen communities, and help build a safer, more inclusive and more connected modern Britain.
3. Pride and opportunity in every place
Every part of Britain should give people the chance to belong, participate and build a future they are proud of, wherever they live. DCMS works with communities and places to make that possible - supporting the culture, sport, creativity and civil society that give places life, investing in digital infrastructure, services and skills, growing the creative and digital economy, and making sure people of all ages, especially children and young people, can participate safely and confidently.
How we deliver it
-
Grow the economy: Strengthening the UK’s digital and data economies, creative industries and public digital infrastructure to fuel innovation, create jobs and deliver growth across every part of the country.
-
Enable participation and widen opportunity: Helping everyone take part, be creative and feel part of their community. Where someone grows up or lives should not limit what they can achieve.
-
Connect people and places: Investing in effective and reliable digital networks, services, media and infrastructure that help people stay connected and navigate modern life, including simpler and more accessible digital public services.
-
Keep people safe and build trust: Protecting people, especially children, strengthening cyber resilience and national security, ensuring that data is used responsibly, and making sure the public services, information, organisations and spaces people rely on are safe, fair and trustworthy.
