North Oxfordshire gets broadband boost four months early through Project Gigabit
Project Gigabit has brought full-fibre broadband to 3,880 rural North Oxfordshire premises, completing the rollout four months ahead of schedule.
- Homes and businesses across North Oxfordshire can now access full fibre broadband through a £8.2 million UK Government Project Gigabit contract
- Gigaclear has finished the build four months ahead of schedule, connecting 3,880 premises across rural communities
- Faster, more reliable broadband will help people work, study, run businesses and access public services online, supporting the Government’s ambition for nationwide gigabit coverage by 2032
People across rural North Oxfordshire can now access faster, more reliable broadband after the UK Government’s Project Gigabit rollout in the area completed four months ahead of schedule, bringing full fibre to 3,880 premises across rural villages and hamlets.
The new connections, delivered by broadband supplier Gigaclear, are helping to bring better broadband to communities that would otherwise be left behind in the rollout of gigabit-capable broadband, due to their challenging and often remote location.
The premises are spread across rural communities including Stratton Audley, Hanwell, Horley, Wendlebury and North Newington, as well as surrounding villages and hamlets.
The faster, more reliable broadband built through Project Gigabit can help people work, study, run businesses and access public services online, while supporting local economies and creating new opportunities for jobs and growth.
This comes after the Government announced that Project Gigabit is helping to support around 3,000 skilled jobs and apprenticeships, creating opportunities for people to build careers in the UK’s digital infrastructure sector.
Telecoms Minister, Ian Murray said:
Finishing this broadband upgrade four months early is great news for communities across rural North Oxfordshire, with thousands of homes and businesses now able to get fast, reliable connections thanks to government investment.
That can make a real difference day to day - from working or running a business from home, to helping with homework or simply keeping in touch with family and friends.
Nathan Rundle, CEO of Gigaclear, said:
Completing our North Oxfordshire Project Gigabit build four months ahead of schedule is a fantastic achievement for the Gigaclear team.
Thousands of homes and businesses can now access full fibre, bringing faster and more reliable connectivity to rural communities that have historically been underserved.
We’re proud to have worked with BDUK and the government to deliver this project ahead of schedule and help close the digital divide.
The North Oxfordshire contract is one of two Project Gigabit contracts being delivered by Gigaclear in Oxfordshire. Together, they represent £23.1 million of government subsidy and are expected to bring gigabit-capable broadband to around 9,300 premises across North and South Oxfordshire.
Work is continuing on Gigaclear’s South Oxfordshire Project Gigabit contract.
Project Gigabit is helping kickstart growth and boost productivity in every postcode, giving communities the digital infrastructure they need to create jobs, grow local economies and make the most of new opportunities. This supports the Government’s wider ambition to put power closer to people and communities.
