Lord Risby, the British Prime Minister’s Envoy for Economic Partnership with Algeria, visited Algiers 16-17 November. He was being hosted for lunch by Energy Minister, and his counterpart as Economic Envoy, HEM Youcef Yousfi. He met Minister of Industry & Mines HEM Abdesslem Bouchouareb, who is leading the arrangements for the Algeria Investment Forum in London in early December. Lord Risby also met Health Minister HEM Abdelmalek Boudiaf, Minister of National Education HEM Nouria and Finance Minister HEM Mohamed Djellab.
This visit is a major part of the preparations for the Algeria Investment Forum in London in early December. Investment by British companies in Algeria is already creating jobs and helping the Algerian government in its policy of diversifying the economy. Together with Algerian partners, we are helping to build hospitals, launch satellites, invest in Algeria’s agricultural sector and improve teaching of the English language. The Investment Forum in London will include 400 representatives of British businesses interested in developing that cooperation even further in many different sectors of Algeria’s growing economy.
On arriving in Algeria, Lord Risby said:
“I am delighted to be returning to Algeria. It’s my seventh visit since being appointed as the Prime Minister’s Envoy for Economic Partnership in November 2012. In that time, I have seen impressive growth in the commercial partnership between Algeria and the UK – trade between our two countries grew by 62% last year. The Investment Forum in December is an unprecedented opportunity to make a true step-change in our commercial relationship. I am here this week to support the Algerian and British governments’ efforts to make that event as successful as possible.”
