Consul General Keith Allan visited the city of Krasnodar to see preparations for the Winter Olympics and Paralympics being held in nearby Sochi.

During his visit he met:

  • the Mayor, Vladimir Evlanov

  • the Minister of Strategic Development, Investments and External Economic Activity, Andrey Proshunin

  • the Chairman of the Krasnodar Regional Chamber of Commerce, Yuri Tkachenko

  • plus other officials and business people

In addition to discussing preparations for the Winter Olympics, in which many British companies have been involved, he was briefed on economic developments in the city and the wider region which is keen to attract more UK business and investment.

As well as the Winter Olympics, Sochi will also host the International Investment Forum in September and Russia’s first Formula One Grand Prix race in October. It will also be one of 11 host cities for the 2018 FIFA Football World Cup.

Background

Krasnodar is the regional administrative centre with a population of around one million. The Consul General heard about its role as the transport hub and cultural and industrial centre for southern Russia and its position as one of the most investor friendly cities in country.

It is the sister city of Nottingham and they signed a partnership agreement in 2010, leading to a series of exchanges. The Mayor wants to encourage further joint activity and a business delegation from the region is expected to visit the UK later this year.
