Government Geography Profession conference 2025

Summary of the Government Geography Profession annual conference held on Tuesday 18 November and Wednesday 19 November 2025.

The Government Geography Profession held its seventh annual conference at the Ordnance Survey HQ in Southampton on the 18 and 19 November 2025.  The event brought together members of the profession from across the UK and the public sector ranging from central Government departments to Local Authorities.

The conference had a packed agenda of presentations showcasing the work of geographers across the public sector.

Across the event there were a variety of sessions for attendees to engage with including:

  • Keynote presentations about the applications of geography and geospatial techniques across departments and academia.
  • Roundtable discussions on a variety of subjects including Earth Observation (EO), uses of AI and how geographers add value to organisations.
  • Poster presentations, showcasing the work of profession members.
  • Presentations of use cases of spatial data and techniques from profession members.
  • Tours of artefacts from the history of Ordnance Survey.

A recurring theme throughout the conference was the value of maps in transforming raw data into actionable insights. Speakers noted that visualising spatial information enables policymakers to better assess the impact of decisions and respond to environmental and societal changes.

With all aspects of the event highlighting the shared commitment of specialists to collaborate and innovate in the field of geospatial data.
