British Minister for the Middle East and North Africa Tobias Ellwood MP paid a visit to Algiers 26-27 November. The visit came during the preparations for Prime Minister Sellal visiting London for the Algeria Investment Forum on 10 December.

Mr Ellwood met his counterpart Deputy Foreign Minister Abdelkader Messahel and visited the historic Casbah of Algiers.

During his visit, Mr Ellwood said:

I am delighted to visit Algeria for the first time. It is an extraordinarily busy period for the blossoming partnership between the UK and Algeria. Prime Minister Sellal’s visit to London, and the Investment Forum, is an unprecedented opportunity to make a true step-change in our commercial relationship.

Deputy Foreign Minister Messahel and I discussed some difficult security and regional issues, following on from the third round of our Strategic Security Partnership dialogue in London in October. I supported the key role Algeria plays in the region, including mediating in the Mali negotiations in such an open and constructive way. We urge the Malian government and the northern groups to seize this unique opportunity to find an inclusive and lasting agreement that will meet the needs of all Malians.
