David Lelliott to visit National Institute of Sports in Patiala

The British Deputy High Commissioner for NorthWest India, David Lelliott will visit the Netaji Subhash National Institute of Sports.

With only two weeks to go until the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, the British Deputy High Commissioner for NorthWest India, David Lelliott will visit the Netaji Subhash National Institute of Sports, Patiala on Wednesday to meet some of India’s Commonwealth Games Team and wish them luck.

The XX Commonwealth Games will be held in Glasgow, Scotland, from 23 July to 3 August 2014. There will be 11 Days of Competition for 250 medal events. The Commonwealth Games is an international, multi-sport event involving 70 teams from Commonwealth family. The 2014 Games, which have the official motto: People, Place, Passion, will play host to 4500 athletes and sell 1,000,000 tickets with the event supported by an army of 15,000 volunteers. This is the third time that Scotland has hosted the Games.

David Lelliott said:

This is a very exciting time for Britain. The Glasgow Games present a special opportunity for the UK to create new relations and deepen our friendships with India and other Commonwealth countries across the world. India performed impressively at the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games and I am very much looking forward to meeting Indian athletes and representatives of the Sports Authority of India and hearing from them how Team India’s preparations are progressing. I wish them all a happy and successful Games, and look forward to hearing about their achievements in due course.

India will be one of the 70 nations participating in the Games. It has competed in fifteen of the nineteen previous Commonwealth Games. At the 2010 Commonwealth Games, India came second in the medal tally for the first time, and is now fourth in the all-time tally of medals, with an overall total of 372 medals (141 Gold, 123 Silver and 108 Bronze)

S S Roy, Regional Director, Sports Authority of India, Bahadur Singh, national coach, athletics; J S Sandhu, national coach, boxing; CR Kumar, national coach, women’s hockey, B Mukherjee, national coach, table tennis will be present, along with the Commonwealth teams for athletics, women’s hockey, boxing and table tennis.
