Clearing the Way to University

Jackie Currie, Executive Director of Customer, at SLC

It feels like exam results day comes around quicker every year. However, for students waiting for that text or letter, I’m sure it’s felt like a very long summer.

Whether you’ve achieved the grades you hoped for, are exploring your options through Clearing, or are considering a different path altogether, it’s important to remember that there are lots of routes to success, and support is available whatever you decide to do next.

For many students, the results will mean that they will have secured their university place. For others, Clearing may bring an opportunity they hadn’t previously considered.

If you plan to go to university, there are just a few weeks until the start of the academic year and to help make the transition as smooth as possible, here are some simple steps to ensure your student finance is ready in time.

If you’ve applied for student finance and your plans haven’t change

  • Great news. We’ve got everything we need for now and we’ll continue to keep you updated through your online account as your application progresses. You’ll be able to track your student finance through your online account and once we have your Confirmation of Registration from your university you will receive updates on your payment date, etc.

If you’ve already applied for student finance and need to change your course or university

  • If your plans have changed, there’s no need to contact us.  Simply log into your online account and update your university or college, along with your course details. It’s quick and easy to do online, and it helps us make sure your funding is in place for the start of your studies.

You haven’t applied for student finance, and you’ve been accepted onto a course

  • Apply as soon as you can.

  • The application takes around 30 minutes to complete online.

  • A typical application takes around four weeks to process, and you can track progress through your online account.

  • If you apply late, we’ll still do everything we can to get money to you as close to the start of your course as possible. We can make an initial assessment, so funding is available when you need it, with any additional entitlement paid later if required.

  • You can find more information about student finance and Clearing here - Guidance for students going through Clearing - GOV.UK

We know results day can bring a mix of emotions, from excitement and relief to uncertainty about what comes next. That’s why we’ve made information available online and across our social media channels to help answer your questions and guide you through the process.

Whatever the outcome, SLC is ready to support you with your student finance.
