Careers with the Government Economic Service
If you are interested in a career in government economics, there are several ways you can join the Government Economic Service
We run annual recruitment schemes for people at different stages of their career journey, from school leavers to experienced economists. Here is an overview of the schemes we run:
For students
We run two schemes for students in their penultimate year of study: the Sandwich Placement Scheme and the Summer Scheme. Opportunities are available across the UK.
-
GES Sandwich Scheme | Opens in autumn of each year
If you would like to spend a year working in a government department, making a difference to society, and learning about the role of economics in government then you might be interested in our Sandwich Scheme. Find out more about the scheme, the eligibility criteria and how to register your interest. -
GES Summer Scheme | Opens in autumn of each year
Much like our Sandwich Scheme, but shorter, the Summer Scheme is for those who want to spend a summer building work experience and learning about government economics. Find out more about the scheme, the eligibility criteria and how to register your interest.
For graduates
-
Assistant Economist Scheme | Opens in winter of each year
As an economist in government, you will have the opportunity to influence how the government responds to the most important public policy challenges of the day. Assistant Economist roles are available at a range of government departments across the UK. Find out more about the scheme, the eligibility criteria and how to register your interest. -
Government Economic Service Fast Stream | Usually opens in autumn
On the GES Fast Stream you will have the opportunity to influence policy and shape the government’s response to today’s essential economic issues. The Fast Stream scheme is an accelerated development programme that seeks to develop future leaders, both in the GES and the Civil Service more widely and therefore has a specific focus on leadership skills and experience. Find out more about the scheme and the eligibility criteria.
Apprenticeships
-
GES Degree Level Apprenticeship Scheme | Opens in winter of each year
For those without an economics degree, we run a nationwide degree-level apprenticeship scheme. This is a four-year programme which offers you the opportunity to work in a government department at the same time as studying for a fee-free Economics degree with the University of Kent. Find out more about the scheme, the eligibility criteria and how to register your interest.
