Careers in Government Social Research

If you are interested in a career in social research, there are several ways you can join Government Social Research.

We run annual recruitment schemes for people at different stages of their career journey, from school leavers to experienced researchers. Here is an overview of the schemes we run each year:

For students

We run a year-long placement scheme for students in their penultimate year of study. Opportunities available across the UK.

For graduates

  • Research Officer Scheme | Opens in winter of each year
As a Research Officer working in the Civil Service, you would contribute through analysis of social trends, development of government policy, and evaluation of how policies make a difference to public services. Research Officer roles are available at a range of government departments across the UK. Find out more about the scheme, the eligibility criteria and how to register your interest.

  • Government Social Research Fast Stream | Usually opens autumn of each year
On the GSR Fast Stream you will have the opportunity to work on issues that really matter. The Fast Stream scheme is an accelerated development programme that seeks to develop future leaders, both in the GSR and the Civil Service more widely and therefore has a specific focus on leadership skills and experience. Find out more about the scheme, the eligibility criteria and how to register your interest.

Apprenticeships

  • GSR Degree Level Apprenticeship Scheme | Opens in winter of each year
For those without a a further education qualification at level 6 (degree level) or above, we run a nationwide degree-level apprenticeship scheme. This is a four-year programme which offers you the opportunity to work in a government department at the same time as studying for a Social Research degree with the University of Kent. Find out more about the scheme, the eligibility criteria and how to register your interest.
