Drop the knife celebration

At the event organised by the Gambian Committee on Traditional Practices (GAMCOTRAP) led by Dr Isatou Touray, representatives of 336 small regional communities came together to celebrate their collective decision to protect girls from Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).

Commenting, UK High Commissioner David Morley said:

This is my second ‘drop the knife’ ceremony I have been to since my arrival in The Gambia and I applaud the excellent work of GAMCOTRAP and Dr Touray for their hard work and devotion in eradicating FGM across The Gambia.

I congratulate all who were involved in what was a remarkable day and look forward to hearing about more communities across The Gambia signalling their commitment to ending FGM.
