Social Ostracism in Higher Education (HE) Settings

DfE has convened sector experts, academics and bereaved families to share lessons and embed best practice to prevent the often-tragic outcomes of social ostracism in HE settings.

Role

The Department for Education (DfE) committed to convening a roundtable in its response to the Prevention of Future Deaths Report, following the tragic death of Alexander Rogers.

The coroner’s report highlighted:

  • the potential for more students to be harmed by social ostracism
  • a lack of trust in the current formal processes for reporting allegations about fellow students

As it set out in its response, DfE believes that working together with the HE sector to learn lessons, and to identify and embed best practice, is the best way to prevent further such tragedies.
