BIS Automotive sector team

BIS Automotive Unit’s job is to help the UK automotive industry succeed.

It does this by encouraging the spread of best practice in design and manufacture, supporting inward investment and working with industry and across government to make the UK a great place to do automotive business. A key focus is to support delivery of the Automotive Industrial Strategy.

Relationship Management Team

Responsible for BIS’s strategic relationships with the major vehicle manufacturers and suppliers based in the UK. The team also leads on the relationship with the UK construction equipment industry. The team works closely with UKTI and the Automotive Investment Organisation in coordinating the Unit’s activity on trade development and investment and on issues impacting on the components sector as a whole.

Automotive Policy & Regulation Team

Leading on regulatory and policy issues affecting the automotive sector, one of its main roles is to ensure that industry’s concerns are taken fully into account by Government and the European Commission. Dealing with issues such as technical regulations and active involvement in the CARS 2020 Group. The team is responsible for VIPER - the Government/Industry policy group and BIS’s relationship with the automotive trade association - the SMMT.

Innovation and Technology Team

The team leads on strategic issues where innovation and technology are central to the sustainable development of the automotive sector as a critical part of the future transport system. It is responsible for taking forward BIS’s objectives contained in the technology chapter of the Automotive Industrial Strategy, including the setting up of the £1bn Advanced Propulsion Centre and manages the Unit’s relationship with TSB, EPSRC, OLEV, the Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership, UK H2 Mobility and UK automotive technology companies. The I&T Team plays a leading role in the Technology Strategy Board’s Low Carbon Vehicle Innovation Platform, Knowledge Transfer Networks and High Value Manufacturing and Transport Systems Catapults.

Analysis Team

Analysis of the sector is provided by the LG Business Analysis Team. The team is responsible for analysing key trends in the automotive sector and their implications for the future growth of the industry in the UK. It works closely with trade associations and academic and other analysts and is particularly involved in the supply chain development work of the Automotive Council.
