Detail of outcome

The Highways Agency has evaluated the feedback on its proposals to introduce variable mandatory speed limits for the M1 motorway J39 to J42 Managed Motorway scheme. Given the positive responses, this report recommends that variable mandatory speed limits be implemented on the M1 between Junctions 39 and 42.

Consultation description

The Highways Agency proposes to improve the M1 by making it a ‘managed motorway’ between Junctions 39 (Durkar) and 42 (Lofthouse Interchange).

Managed motorways help relieve congestion by using the hard shoulder as a running lane and using technology to vary the mandatory speed limits.

We have drafted regulations regarding implementation of these variable speed limits and are keen for any organisations, businesses or individuals affected by these proposals to provide their views. We are interested specifically in how the draft regulations could affect you, your organisation or those you represent.
