Case study

State of the art leisure facility in West Denton supported by almost £20 million funding

A new leisure facility is being developed in West Denton, with almost £20 million from the Levelling Up Fund.

The new sport and wellbeing hub will replace two ageing buildings:

  • the former West Denton Pool
  • All Saints Sports Centre

The existing facilities have helped generations for more than half a century, but:

  • West Denton Pool hasn’t reopened since the pandemic
  • All Saints centre is coming to the end of its useful life

What the new leisure facility offers

Outer West Leisure Centre will feature a:

  • 25 metre swimming pool with room for spectators
  • learner pool
  • teaching pool
  • new library
  • studio
  • café
  • gym

The new facility is expected to:

  • attract over 500,000 visits per year
  • generate around 27 new full-time jobs
  • provide training opportunities

This project is expected to be a catalyst for wider investment in the area.

Council grateful for community collaboration

Councillor Lesley Storey, cabinet member for a Vibrant City, who has responsibility for leisure, said:

It will offer residents excellent health, community and leisure facilities and become a showcase building for the city with its 8-lane pool, sports hall, and library, among other things.

We have actively encouraged local people to have their say on what they would like to see in the leisure centre, and we now have a proposed building that will cater for people of all interests, ages, and backgrounds.

I’d like to thank everyone who took part in the consultation and look forward to the building opening in 2024.
