Overview

Your premises must be registered or approved by Department for Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) if you manufacture, market or use animal feeds in Northern Ireland.

You need approval to manufacture or place on the market, or both, for:

  • nutritional additives
  • zootechnical additives such as digestibility enhancers, gut flora stabilisers and substances which favourably affect the environment
  • antioxidant additives with a maximum content in feeds specified in EC Regulation 1831/2003
  • colourant additives such as carotenoids and xanthophylls
  • proteins obtained from micro-organisms belonging to groups of bacteria, yeast, algae and lower fungi
  • co-products of the manufacture of amino acids by fermentation
  • premixtures containing vitamins A and D
  • premixtures containing copper and selenium

Registration of feed additives, pre-mixtures, bio-proteins and compound feedstuffs is required for:

  • placing on the market of compound feedstuffs
  • manufacturing pet foods
  • manufacturing feed materials
  • placing on the market of feed materials
  • the transport and storage of feed and feed products
  • on-farm mixers
  • food businesses selling co-products of the food industry
  • livestock farms which do not mix feeds or mix feeds without additives
  • arable farms growing or selling crops for feed

Fines and penalties

You may be fined or imprisoned, or both, if you manufacture, market or use animal feeds without being approved or registered.
