Details

You can only ask for a refund for tax years that have ended. This is because we can only check if a refund is available after confirming your annual income with HMRC. This will not happen until after the end of the tax year. The UK’s tax year runs from 6 April to 5 April.

Remember if we refund you, the amount you get will be added back onto your total balance.

Don’t contact us to ask how much you might get as a refund. We’ll let you know how much you’ll get after we’ve processed your request.

You only need to submit one refund request. When we process your request, we’ll refund you for all the tax years you’re due a refund for!

Refunds for the 2023-24 tax year

You do not need to do anything now. We’ll get your income information from HMRC later this year. When we do, we’ll check how much you’ve repaid and let you know if a refund is available.

You should make sure your contact details are up to date in your online account so you don’t miss any important updates from us.

Asking for a refund for any other previous tax year

You should sign in to your online repayment account and select ‘Request a refund’.

You can check the previous annual repayment threshold for any year you think you might have a refund available.

We can’t tell you how much your refund will be until we process your request.
