ESFA Update academies: 3 May 2023

Published 3 May 2023

Applies to England

1. Action: Public sector data return 2023

Between 2017 and 2022 the number of apprenticeship starts across the public sector grew to over 280,000.

Apprenticeships play an important role in the public sector, they give employers the skills they need to deliver vital services and provide opportunities for people to start high quality careers, boost their skills or retrain.

We want to ensure continued transparency in the use of apprenticeships in the public sector, so we wrote recently to inform you that we wanted public sector employers, with 250 or more staff, to continue collecting and reporting data.

To report your data, please use the form under the ‘Apprentices’ tab on the homepage of your ‘Apprenticeship Service Account’. The data we need by 31 May 2023, for the period 1 April 2022 to 31 March 2023, includes:

  • Total number of new apprenticeship starts
  • Total number of apprentices
  • Organisation headcount

More information is published in guidance on GOV.UK. If you require further support, please contact helpdesk@manage-apprenticeships.service.gov.uk.

Thank you for your continued support.

For each state-funded school and 16 to 19 organisation that employs a teacher or leader who takes a NPQ in the 2023 to 2024 academic year, the following funding will apply:

  • state-funded primary schools with 1 to 150 pupils will receive a grant payment of £800
  • state-funded primary schools with more than 150 pupils will receive a grant payment of £200
  • state-funded secondary schools and state-funded 16 to 19 educational settings with 1 to 600 pupils will receive a grant payment of £200
