Interoperable Demand Side Response programme

The Interoperable Demand Side Response (IDSR) programme aims to support the development and demonstration of energy smart appliances for the delivery of interoperable demand side response.

The IDSR programme (over £12.8 million) consists of three streams of work, to support the innovation, design, and demonstration of interoperable demand side response systems.

Online information events

An online information event was hosted on 14 June 2022 to provide further information on the funding opportunities for interoperable demand side response. Download the slides from this event.

We held a ‘how to apply’ information session on 14 June to provide guidance on how to apply to Flexibility Innovation Programme grant funded and Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) competitions via our application platform Smart Survey. You can find the slides and a recording of the session on the Flexibility Innovation Programme page.

Interoperable Demand Side Response engagement session

We held an IDSR engagement session on 3 March 2022. Download the slides presented at this engagement session (PDF).

Background

The 2021 Smart Systems and Flexibility Plan set out a suite of policies to enable flexibility from consumers, known as “demand side response”. Consumers will need access to “energy smart” appliances that make it easier to change their consumption patterns, alongside tariffs and services that incentivise this change .

Interoperability of energy smart appliances will enable consumers to access different propositions for demand side response, either earning revenue or reducing costs through providing value to the energy system. Increased uptake of demand side response will reduce the costs of decarbonisation, reducing bills for all consumers.

As part of this, the government has committed to taking powers to set regulatory requirements for “energy smart” appliances, guided by the core principles of interoperability, data privacy, cyber security, and grid stability.

This programme is part of the up to £65 million overarching Flexibility Innovation Programme which seeks to enable large-scale widespread electricity system flexibility through smart, flexible, secure, and accessible technologies and markets. The Flexibility Innovation Programme will fund innovation across a range of key smart energy applications, and sits within the £1 billion Net Zero Innovation Portfolio (NZIP).

Streams closed to applications

Stream 1, Stream 2 and Stream 3 of the competition closed to applications on 29 July 2022.

Stream 1 (closed to applications)

The Interoperable Demand Side Response (IDSR) Stream 1 seeks to support the development and demonstration of energy smart appliances to deliver interoperable demand side response according to the Publicly Available Specification (PAS) 1878 and 1879.

Stream 2 (closed to applications)

The Interoperable Demand Side Response (IDSR) Stream 2 seeks to support the development and demonstration of energy smart appliances to deliver interoperable demand side response via the GB smart metering system.

Stream 3 (closed to applications)

The Interoperable Demand Side Response (IDSR) Stream 3 seeks to support feasibility studies to improve and develop understanding of how energy management systems (EMS) can act together with energy smart appliances to deliver interoperable demand side response.

Testing and demonstration will be delivered by the independent delivery partner(s) appointed for the programme.
