| Registered places | Registered places show the number of children that may attend the provision at any one time. Registered places are not the number of places occupied, nor the number of children who may benefit from receiving places through providers offering sessions at different times of the day. They show the total places available for children under eight. As of 1 September, providers can only care for children in accordance with the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage. Data were unavailable for a small number of EYR providers at the time of compilation. If aggregating data, a more accurate indication of the size of the sector can be gained from using the 'Registered places including estimates' field instead, as this additionally includes averages where actual place numbers were unavailable. |

| Deprivation band | Providers are allocated to one of five deprivation bands, based on quintiles calculated from the IDACI ranks of all 2001 lower super output area (LSOA). |
