Using annual estimates from summed monthly GVA data

Updated 5 October 2022

1. About these estimates

These annual estimates have been produced by summing monthly GVA estimates for the 12 calendar months in each year from 2019 to 2021. They are our most timely way of estimating GVA for DCMS Sectors (excluding Tourism, where estimates remain unavailable) but, as they are based on the monthly GVA estimates, similar caveats apply (full methodology), and they should be used with caution. These estimates will be superseded by our more robust annual GVA series when data becomes available.

2. Key technical points

  • The estimates are based on the monthly data of January 2019 to June 2022, as published in August 2022. The monthly GVA gives a timely estimate that is then revised frequently as new data becomes available. The monthly index is revised regularly and these summed estimates will be revised in future if necessary.
  • These summed annual GVA figures are different to those we have already published for 2019 and 2020, again due to the ongoing revision of monthly estimates.
  • These estimates cannot be directly compared to our annual GVA estimates series, due to methodology differences, however it is possible to look at trends up to 2019 using the annual series, and trends from 2019 using these estimates. You can find data from 2010 to 2019 in our most recent annual GVA publication.

3. Key findings

3.1 All DCMS Sectors (excluding Tourism)

  • We estimate that GVA by DCMS Sector businesses in 2021 was £211 billion, an increase of 8% from 2020. This is 2% lower in real terms than in 2019, prior to the pandemic; a similar decrease to the UK economy as a whole (-2%).

  • Our traditional annual GVA estimates showed that, up to 2019, GVA by the DCMS Sectors grew faster than GVA by the UK economy as a whole, increasing by 30% in real terms between 2010 and 2019 compared to 17% for the UK economy.

3.2 Civil Society

  • We estimate that in 2021, GVA by Civil Society was £17 billion, similar in real terms to 2019, in comparison to the lower GVA by the UK economy as a whole (-2%).

  • We were not able to calculate growth for Civil Society in our traditional annual GVA estimates due to lack of suitable data.
