On 23 May 2023 we announced the outcome of the consultation and intention to extend the ban on dealing ivory to 5 species.

On 21 May 2024 we confirmed that the Ivory Act 2018 will be extended to: 

  • common hippopotamus
  • killer whale
  • narwhal
  • sperm whale

Importing walrus ivory and placing it on the market in the UK is already banned subject to existing narrow exemptions.

We would like to know what you think about extending the Ivory Act (2018) to other ivory bearing species.

We have set out some options for you to consider and provide us with evidence to support or reject our options. You can also suggest your own options, with evidence to support your proposal.

We are running this consultation following a call for evidence on non-elephant ivory trade we undertook in 2019.
