Struggling to Sustain Marriages and Build Families.
Abstract
The classic pattern in which male migrants left their wives and children behind in rural areas remains important in Vietnam, but today women outnumber men as migrants to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh, and like men, and a significant proportion are in their peak child-bearing years. Instead of women being necessarily ‘tied to the bamboo grove’ after marriage by their reproductive responsibilities, there are now a range of alternative and shifting marital and parenting strategies amongst low income migrants with young families. The paper explores these strategies through 77 life histories of male and female migrants from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh (collected in 2008).
