Abstract

This brief presents the learning generated by the Market Development Activities (MDA) workstream that Practical Action delivered under the Moving Energy Initiative (MEI) in Burkina Faso between 2017 and 2018. The objective of the workstream is to improve refugees’ access to energy – particularly ‘clean energy’ using contemporary approaches in the development sector such as: markets-for-the-poor (M4P) ‘systems-thinking’, and the field of complex adaptive systems for development. This was done in a practical way by supporting energy system actors to try out new strategies and adopt new practices and behaviours and adapt to the emerging environment.

This brief is an output of the Moving Energy Initiative (MEI), a collaboration between Energy 4 Impact, Chatham House, Practical Action, the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
