Details

The Department for Business, Innovation & Skills (BIS) and its partners allocate funding for research capital (research equipment). However they may not have a good understanding of how the different funding streams are combined within UK higher education institutions (HEIs). HEIs have a large level of strategic independence and make decisions internally on how to make their investments.

This report explores the patterns of research expenditure in HEIs. It explains the effects of reducing or increasing funding for research capital.

To understand the impact of cuts in funding associated with the 2010 Spending Review, the study analyses:

  • public research capital funding
  • discretionary research capital funding
  • the relationships between research capital funds and other resources
