The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), through its £505 million Energy Innovation Programme, is exploring how low income and vulnerable consumers can engage in and increasingly benefit from a smart energy system. It has commissioned the Energy Systems Catapult (ESC) to undertake a first phase of work to create a robust evidence base and recommendations for future innovation programmes.

ESC will apply its experience designing and delivering innovation with low income and vulnerable consumers to identify how future innovation can enable these consumers to benefit from a smart energy system. The team will do this by reviewing relevant evidence and engaging with ESC’s extensive network of innovators and expert stakeholders to provide the evidence base to underpin recommendations for future innovation programmes.

The project is expected to be completed by March 2021.
