1. Pumps

  1. Variable delivery pumps, construction and theory of operation.
  2. Swash plate type pump.

2. Hydraulic systems

  1. Application of hydraulic control systems.
  2. Constant pressure hydraulic system for deck machinery (crane, windlass etc).
  3. Constant pressure hydraulic system for a stabiliser system.

3. Electrical plant

  1. Function and operation of AVR (auto-voltage regulator).
  2. Star Delta motor connection.
  3. Load sharing between generators.
  4. Inverters.
  5. Alternating current (A.C.) motor soft starting and speed controllers.

4. Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (AC) plant

  1. Principles of refrigeration.
  2. Design, construction and operation of refrigeration systems (direct and indirect expansion and secondary cooling).
  3. Design, construction and operation of AC systems.
  4. Refrigeration compressors (sealed unit, reciprocating, rotary).
  5. Safety features. (Oil pressure cut-outs & gas high pressure trips, electrical overload trip, safety heads.).
  6. Gases and oils.
  7. Blended refrigerants.
  8. Understands the terms and relevance of zoetrope, azeotrope, near-azeotrope and glide, when applied to blended refrigerants.
  9. Planned maintenance of Refrigeration and AC plants.
  10. Fault finding of Refrigeration and AC plants.
  11. Types of refrigeration gas bottles (single valve, double valve, with/without dip- tube).
  12. Charging a refrigeration system.
  13. Checking a refrigeration system for air, removing air from the system.
  14. Symptoms and effects of overcharging a refrigeration system.
  15. Symptoms and effects of undercharging a refrigeration system.
  16. Methods of draining a refrigerant from a system.

5. High pressure air compressor and air system

  1. Construction and operation of multi-stage high pressure air compressors.
  2. Filtering and cleaning of high pressure breathing air.
  3. Testing and certification of compressed air cylinders.

6. Lifting plant

  1. Lifting appliances and winches including:
    1. Hydraulic equipment (types of hydraulic circuit, identification of symbols, fluids);
    2. Regulations, testing and certification of winches and lifting equipment;
    3. Thorough examination, regulations, testing and certification of ‘loose gear,’ lifting strops and wires.

7. Alternative fuels

  1. Safe storage and use of alternative fuels and operation e.g. Tenders and recreational vessels including:
    1. Petrol and LPG;
    2. Construction and safe operation of outboard motors;
    3. Construction, handling and maintenance of inflatable and semi-inflatable craft;
    4. Aviation fuels for helicopter use.

8. Ship construction and dry docking

  1. Protective coatings.
  2. Transverse and longitudinal stresses and causes.
  3. Panting and pounding stresses and causes.
  4. Transverse and longitudinal framing construction.
  5. Vibration, cause and effect.
  6. Structural fire protection and subdivision.
  7. Watertight integrity and subdivision.
  8. Position, height and number of watertight bulkheads.
  9. Purpose, construction and regulations regarding the collision bulkhead.
  10. Watertight bulkhead and deck penetrations (doors, hatches, vents, pipes, shafts electrical glands).
  11. Static and dynamic condition of vessel in the water.
  12. The effect of vessel (yacht, tug, workboat, fishing vessel) design on the stability of the vessel.
  13. Effect of modifications and moving weights on stability.
  14. Awareness of hazardous materials used in ship construction (EU Directives/Hong Kong convention).
