G7 countries adopted the 2015 G7 Elmau Broad Food Security Commitment to:
- improve global food security and nutrition by 2030
- take responsibility for lifting 500 million people out of hunger and poverty through their combined efforts
They also committed to report annually through a comprehensive set of standard indicators. These include direct, indirect and multilateral financial contributions for assistance in agriculture, fishing, food security and nutrition. More qualitative parameters also gauge focus on smallholder farmers, gender equality, climate change and aligning responsible investment standards. This year’s report, produced through the the G7 Food Security Working Group, is based on 2018 and 2019 data.
Overall, the G7 countries have shown continuous commitments to improve food security and nutrition. Since the start of the reporting, cumulative G7 direct assistance for agriculture, fishing, food security, and nutrition rose from US$ 8.8 billion, to US$ 10.7 billion in 2019. The proportion directed towards sub-Saharan African countries increased from less than half to over 70% (US$ 7.4 billion).
