CCTV monitoring by in-house employees

Published 19 August 2020

1. Request

We remotely monitor CCTV for clients across the UK using SIA licensed operators. One of our clients has asked the following question:

They currently outsource out of hours concierge duties to an SIA licensed guard, whose role is to watch the cameras until all employees have left the building, at which point they lock and leave. We then take over remote CCTV monitoring. If their CCTV cameras do not view or are masked from viewing public space, could the onsite role be fulfilled by a non-SIA employee of the company?

2. Response

I can confirm that we do hold some of the information you have requested.

Without knowing the full range of activities the individual is expected to carry out as part of their role of monitoring the CCTV cameras, we cannot be certain whether they require a SIA licence or not. To help you determine whether a licence is required, please find the link to our SIA CCTV flowchart and also the link to the licence identifier tool which is located on our website and which I hope you find useful.
