Ankara-Izmir High Speed Railway Project
2. Description of project
The Project is the construction of 503.2 km high-speed rail (HSR), connecting Ankara, the capital of Turkey, to Izmir, the third largest city. This Project is part of Turkey’s masterplan to develop a 10,000 km network of high-speed rail lines by 2023.
The Project aims to improve the efficiency and adequacy of the transport system in the region by addressing poor rail connectivity and lack of sustainable alternative transport modes. It is designed to ease road traffic congestion and promote socio-economic development, that aims to support tourism in Izmir and economic opportunities.
The Project is largely contained within the existing expropriation corridor, with limited requirement for new land acquisition which will be carried out to international standards.

An Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) has been developed for the Project, complemented by a Stakeholder Engagement Plan (SEP) and a Non-Technical Summary (NTS).
