Updated 28 May 2024

Applies to England and Wales

Sut i wneud cais am gywiriad i gofrestriad priodas/partneriaeth sifil

1. General information

A fee of £99 is payable for an application to correct a marriage[footnote 1]/civil partnership registration. This is a consideration fee, as such, is non-refundable. The fee must be paid at the point of application.

A correction can only be made when the information recorded in the marriage/civil partnership registration or conversion register is wrong. The registration cannot be corrected to show new information if circumstances have changed since the registration was made.

To establish if the error is in the original entry and not just on the certificate, you will need to contact either:

  • the register office in the area where your marriage/civil partnership took place, even if it was a religious marriage
  • the register office where your civil partnership was converted to a marriage

1. Gwybodaeth gyffredinol

Mae ffi o £99 yn daladwy am gais i gywiro cofrestriad priodas[footnote 2]/partneriaeth sifil. Mae’n ffi drafod na ellir ei ad-dalu. Rhaid talu’r ffi wrth gyflwyno cais.

Gellir ond gwneud cywiriad pan fydd yr wybodaeth a gofnodir ar y gofrestr briodas/partneriaeth sifil neu drosi priodas yn anghywir. Ni ellir cywiro’r cofrestriad i ddangos gwybodaeth newydd os yw’r amgylchiadau wedi newid ers i’r cofrestriad gael ei wneud.

I gadarnhau a yw’r gwall yn y cofnod gwreiddiol ac nid ar y dystysgrif yn unig, bydd angen i chi gysylltu naill ai’r:

  • swyddfa gofrestru yr ardal lle digwyddodd eich priodas/partneriaeth sifil, hyd yn oed os oedd yn briodas grefyddol
  • neu’r swyddfa gofrestru lle cafodd eich partneriaeth sifil ei newid i briodas

2. How do I apply for a correction?

You can download an application form.

You should then contact the register office in the area where your marriage/civil partnership took place to check how the fee will be taken and how your application will be processed.

2. Sut alla i wneud cais am gywiriad?

Gallwch lawrlwytho ffurflen gais .

Yna dylech gysylltu â’r swyddfa gofrestru yr ardal lle digwyddodd eich priodas/partneriaeth sifil i wirio sut y bydd y ffi yn cael ei thalu a sut y bydd eich cais yn cael ei brosesu.

3. Who can apply for a correction?

Either party to the marriage/civil partnership can apply, however both parties must be aware that the correction is being made. If both parties are no longer alive, we will not be able to correct the registration.

3. Pwy all wneud cais am gywiriad?

Gall un neu’r ddau o’r briodas/partneriaeth sifil wneud cais, ond rhaid i’r ddau fod yn ymwybodol bod y cywiriad yn cael ei wneud. Os yw’r ddau wedi marw, ni fyddwn yn gallu cywiro’r cofrestriad.

4. What does a correction look like?

The original information will always be shown as it was first given at the time of the registration, but a note will be written in the margin of the registration explaining what the correct information should be and the date on which the correction was made. All certificates issued afterwards will include this note.

4. Sut y bydd cywiriad yn ymddangos?

Bydd yr wybodaeth wreiddiol bob amser yn ymddangos fel y rhoddwyd yn gyntaf ar adeg y briodas neu’r bartneriaeth sifil, ond bydd nodyn ysgrifenedig ar ymyl y cofrestriad yn esbonio sut dylai’r wybodaeth gywir ymddangos a’r dyddiad y gwnaed y cywiriad. Bydd pob tystysgrif a roddir ar ôl hynny yn cynnwys y nodyn hwn.

5. Do I need to prove that the information contained in the marriage/civil partnership certificate is wrong?

You will need to show that the information originally given at the time of marriage/civil partnership was wrong. You should provide a copy of the marriage/civil partnership certificate and produce document(s) which show the correct information. These documents should be valid or dated within the 3 months prior to the date of the marriage/civil partnership. Please see the application form for a list of suitable documents.

If you cannot provide any evidence of an error having occurred, then normally a correction will not be possible. Further advice can be obtained by calling 0300 123 1837.

5. A oes angen i mi brofi bod yr wybodaeth ar y dystysgrif priodas/partneriaeth sifil yn anghywir?

Bydd angen i chi ddangos bod yr wybodaeth a roddwyd yn wreiddiol ar adeg priodas/partneriaeth sifil yn anghywir. Dylech roi copi o’r dystysgrif priodas/partneriaeth sifilachyflwyno dogfen(nau) sy’n dangos yr wybodaeth gywir. Dylai’r dogfennau hyn fod yn ddilys neu wedi’u dyddio o fewn 3 mis cyn dyddiad y briodas/partneriaeth sifil. Gweler y ffurflen gais am restr o ddogfennau addas.

Os na allwch ddarparu unrhyw dystiolaeth bod gwall wedi digwydd, yna ni fydd cywiriad yn bosibl fel arfer. Am gyngor pellach, ffoniwch 0300 123 1837.

6. Do I need to send in original documents?

If sending the application by post and paying for the service over the phone, please do not send original documents with your application form. You should only send in photocopies of documents which have been certified by a professional or reputable person as true copies of the originals.

Read a list of examples of suitable persons who can countersign your document.

Acceptable certifiers are listed under the heading ‘Occupations’.

The person certifying the photocopies must not be related by birth or marriage[footnote 1]/civil partnership to the applicant(s), be in a personal relationship with them or live at the same address. The certifier should:

  • include the words - “Certified to be a true copy of the original seen by me”
  • sign the photocopy
  • print their name
  • confirm their occupation
  • add their address and telephone number

If you are taking the application to a register office and paying in person then the register office should be able to certify your documents as a true copy of the original which means you can retain your original documentation.

General Register Office (GRO) reserves the right to ask you to submit the original document if needed.

GRO and the local registration service will confidentially destroy all certified copies submitted unless specifically asked to return them when your application is made.

6. A fydd angen i mi anfon dogfennau gwreiddiol?

Os byddwch yn anfon eich cais drwy’r post a thalu am y gwasanaeth dros y ffôn, peidiwch ag anfon dogfennau gwreiddiol gyda’ch ffurflen gais. Dylech ond anfon llungopïau o ddogfennau sydd wedi’u hardystio gan berson proffesiynol neu gydag enw da fel copïau cywir o’r gwreiddiol. Am rhestr enghreifftiau o bobl addas, ewch i:

A list of examples of suitable persons who can countersign your document

Am rhestr o ardystiwyr derbyniol, gweler pennawd ‘Swyddi’.

Ni ddylai’r person sy’n ardystio’r llungopïau fod yn berthynas trwy waed neu briodas[footnote 2]/partneriaeth sifil i’r ymgeisydd/ymgeiswyr, bod mewn perthynas personol â hwy neu yn byw yn yr un cyfeiriad a nhw. Dylai’r ardystiwr:

  • gynnwys y geiriau - “Ardystiwyd i fod yn gopi cywir o’r gwreiddiol a welwyd gennyf i”
  • lofnodi’r llungopi
  • ysgrifennu ei enw
  • gadarnhau ei swydd
  • gofnodi ei gyfeiriad a’i rif ffôn

Os byddwch yn mynd â’r cais i Swyddfa Gofrestru ac yn talu yn bersonol yna dylai’r Swyddfa Gofrestru allu ardystio eich dogfennau fel copi cywir o’r gwreiddiol sy’n golygu y gallwch gadw eich dogfennau gwreiddiol.

Mae gan SGG hawl i ofyn i chi gyflwyno’r ddogfen wreiddiol os oes angen.

Bydd SGG a’r gwasanaeth cofrestru lleol yn dileu holl gopïau ardystiedig a gyflwynir yn gyfrinacholoni baieich bod yn gofyn yn benodol iddynt eu dychwelyd pan wnewch chi gais.

7. A oes rhaid i mi fod yn bresennol pan fydd y cofrestriad yn cael ei gywiro?

8. How long will it take for my marriage/civil partnership registration to be corrected?

If there are no problems with your application, you can expect your application to be reviewed within 25 working days of receipt of your documentation by GRO. If GRO needs more information or if you need to submit more paperwork, each further reply may to take up to 25 working days to review.

However, you should be aware that, in exceptional circumstances, it may not always be possible to meet these targets.

Fodd bynnag, dylech fod yn ymwybodol, mewn amgylchiadau arbennig, efallai na fydd yn bosibl bob amser i gyrraedd y targedau hyn.

Os bydd cywiriad yn cael ei awdurdodi, byddwch yn cael gwybod pan fydd wedi’i gwblhau.
