Steve Hickling
Biography
Steve Hickling took up his appointment in Ahmedabad as the British Deputy High Commissioner to Gujarat and Rajasthan on 17 March 2023.
Steve joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 2002 enjoying a varied overseas career having served as Consul in Lima, Peru; Head of the Embassy Office in Almaty, Kazakhstan; and Deputy Head of Mission in Tirana, Albania. Steve also served in Baku, Azerbaijan. Steve’s London roles have covered bilateral relations with Russia, Poland, and the UK’s relationship with the European Commission. Work from King Charles Street has also included time working on Central Africa, and more recently Steve led a team covering the Andean region.
Steve has always enjoyed travel, having spent a year in India during his youth. He enjoys sport including rugby and rowing, but alas was terrible at cricket. Steve is married to Cinzia, and has two teenaged sons.
British Deputy High Commissioner Ahmedabad
In some countries, the Deputy High Commissioner leads a subordinate office to the High Commission in another major city. The Deputy High Commissioner fulfils a similar role to a Consul General, representing the UK government and typically responsible for consular, visa and trade activities in their city or region.
