New BBC Trust Member appointed

Nicholas Prettejohn appointed by Culture Secretary

Nicholas Prettejohn has been appointed to the BBC Trust, Culture Secretary Maria Miller announced today. Mr Prettejohn has been appointed as a BBC Trust Member for four years from 1 January 2014.

Culture Secretary, Maria Miller said:

“ Mr Prettejohn has a strong financial background that will prove invaluable to the Trust. I’m sure he will bring a fresh perspective and have no doubt that the BBC will benefit from his skills.”

The new Trust Member is also an Independent Director of the Prudential Regulation Authority as well as Chair of the Britten-Pears Foundation and Chairman of the Royal Northern College of Music.

The BBC Trust is the governing body of the BBC and is responsible for representing the interests of licence fee payers. It holds to account the Executive Board, which is responsible for the day-to-day management of the BBC.

Mr Prettejohn was Director of Strategy at NFC plc, an international transportation company, before joining Lloyds of London in 1995 as Head of Strategy. At Lloyds he became Managing Director of the Business Development Unit, and then Chief Executive between 1999 and 2005. From 2006 - 2009, he was Chief Executive of Prudential UK & Europe. He has held Non-Executive roles at Legal and General and Brit Insurance.

The BBC Trust is led by the Chairman and has 11 other members including the Vice-Chairman. All members are responsible for representing the public interest as a whole. The Trust includes four members formally designated as members for each of the constituent nations of the United Kingdom.

The appointment has been made in accordance with the OCPA Code of Practice. All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process.
